• Wellness Tip - Expose yourself to sunlight or some type of bright light as soon after waking as possible. - Early exposure to bright light on a consistent daily schedule can help regulate your body’s biological clock.
• Sleep Tip - Practice relaxation before preparing for bed. - Utilize breathing exercises, practice relaxation techniques, and indulge in a warm bath or a soothing whirlpool prior to going to bed. Your sleep should improve as a result.
• Fitness Tip - Know your target heart rate. - Hitting your Target Heart Rate (THR) will help you maximize your workouts by knowing how hard your heart should be working during exercise. To calculate your THR zone, subtract your age from 220. This number is your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR). During exercise, keep your pulse between 60% and 80% of your MHR. For a quick way to check your pulse during exercise, divide your THR (MHR x 60% or 80%) by 6 and check your pulse at 10-second intervals to determine that you are staying within your zone.
• Family Tip - Learn how to let go of daily worries and have a happier vacation. - Time spent away renewing yourself gives you more energy, a fresh perspective, and new ideas for handling work. This means going all the way, no checking e-mail and voice mail while on vacation. Leave work behind mentally and physically. Even if there is a mountain of “things to do” when your return, you can tackle it - revitalized from your great escape!
• Family Tip - Get to school and work on time. - Get everyone organized the night before. Force yourself to pack lunches, lay out clothes, and get backpacks ready. If you are still behind in the mornings, figure out what slows you down and prepare the night before.
• Family Tip - Dance together. - Put on some music and just have fun dancing! Dancing not only burns calories, it is one of the best ways to improve your mood. When we dance we also sing, laugh, and smile. Dance several times a week.
• Family Tip - Teach the value of sharing with others. - Get involved in a service project in the community. There are a number of volunteer organizations that welcome families to work together. This gives your family an opportunity to discover how good it feels to help someone while spending time together.
